The work I do
I design the structural parts of enterprise software: identity and access management, installation and setup, entitlements. The work starts with research, as-is mapping, and user needs, and it ends with flows, prototypes, and patterns other teams can build on. What I’m after is the smallest structure that resolves the problem, so that people can use a system without first having to understand it.
What I’ll ask you
- Who is your user, and what were they trying to get done before your product landed in the middle of it?
- What does someone have to understand about your system before they can do anything useful with it? That gap is usually where the design work is.
- Where does design sit next to architecture and product? Am I there while the system is being shaped, or handed it afterward to make usable?
- What does it actually take to ship here, and who has to agree?
That last question isn’t idle. The install case study is an honest account of a design that was researched, prototyped, and validated, and never built.
